If you haven’t heard this by now, Scratch has updated their terms of service so that AI can train itself on people’s projects. This is a gross appropriation of the trust we have given to Scratch all these years, and a shameful usage of the site itself. Under Section 11 of Scratch’s own terms of service, users are specifically prohibited from, and I quote, “us[ing] the Service or any Output to develop or train any AI or machine learning model.” And yet, Scratch is allowing themselves to do the exact same? For years, Scratch has always been a hub of human-created content. Training AI on the projects of children, mostly aged 11-14, is a disgusting breach of trust. I ask you to get involved and message the Scratch Leadership about this decision. For those who are interested, there is also a petition created by Karkat (@KNIGHTOFBLOOD) on change.org that is attempting to put an end to this policy. The link can be found here: https://www.change.org/p/ban-scratch-from-training-ai-on-art This is a scary time for Scratch, but I urge you to help. If you’ve ever posted a project in your entire time on Scratch, well, now’s the time to fight back, because chances are it’ll be appropriated by AI whether you like it or not.
