(EDITING THIS RN SO THINGS MAY BE WEIRD) D̶O̶N̶T̶ MAYBE PANIC: Scratch's AI TO CLARIFY: I do NOT support generative AI and dislike many of the choices scratch is making. This is an analysis of what is happening. This project to raise awareness, as I've seen lots of people very upset and angry over the recent TOS update. link: https://mitscratch.freshdesk.com/en/support/solutions/articles/4000219182-scratch-terms-of-service Is scratch using our projects to train AI? yes, but NOT image generation. They are instead making a AI assistant, source: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/862281/?page=1#post-8939177 and here's an additional article (they linked this in the form but ill put it here anyway) https://medium.com/scratchteam-blog/introducing-creative-ai-at-scratch-bcdbd6c3efc9 Here they confirm they want "creativity to come first" (so they are at least giving SOME consideration to how they implement this) (UPDATE 23th Jan) I have been provided with more information (thanks @Scratch_Cat_Coder8) I assumed it was a text based assistant bot, but the example this article gives shows thats its more elaborate than that: https://scratchfoundation.org/blog/coming-soon-your-creative-learning-assistant in the example they describe the AI being able to: 1. generate a list of useful steps in response to a question 2. find related projects - this means it could very well be using art and other project assets 3. give you prompts as you make your code and potentially being able to interpret your code so yeah, it's way more of a code generator than i thought, but hopefully not an image generator It has been confirmed by a scratch team member (cheddargirl) that AI image generation has been rejected due to ethical concerns, so we will NOT be getting any AI image generators! hooray! source: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/774167/?page=2#post-8078494 (UPDATE 24th Jan) another update for you: heres a really useful forum post on how exactly the AI works and prototypes link provided by . It is coming out in scratch 4.0, in the second half of 2026. But is it using our art? Maybe? Just not for generating images. after all, in the TOS they state that any work by you can be used for their AI. The bot seems the focus on project code rather than what is in costumes, so it using your art is kinda a murky area. You CAN'T opt-out of giving scratch access to your projects for training this AI, but you can opt-out of using the AI itself They did not communicate this well at ALL. People being so shocked is evidence, they really need to clarify some things. (I'm still unclear if they will make user data accessible to AI companies or not??? They mention they can share your data with third parties in the TOS, however thats common with all companies TOS. It's unlikely, since its a kid's website and they'll probs get in trouble, but they still didn't clarify it) (UPDATE 24th Jan) They have released a post in response to AI concerns, but they dont really clarify anything at all: https://www.scratchfoundation.org/ai They repeat what they said in the other medium article i linked, and their "Guiding Stars and Lines in the Sand" jargon. Scratch, please clarify if you are sharing data with AI companies!!! I don't think they've handled this well at all with everyone being so outraged and upset lol. Hopefully this clears up the situation a little? It's uh... still not great... I may have to change the title.. :( edit: yeah i changed the title LOL I also do think that scratch could end up not releasing this AI tool due to the backlash. lets hope LOL I don't want this D: Original description by Please don't harass any scratch team members Remixes encouraged!
