THIS PROJECT IS MY OPINION, I DO NOT MEAN TO BE OFFENSIVE, JUST CRITICAL. Not gonna make to many assumptions, and we don’t know what the AI features are going to entail, and I am not one of those people who sees the word AI and immediately grabs my pitchfork and torch and protests on the streets because AI is far more nuanced than most anti-AI people realise. Just to set the record straight, I am very much against in situations where it would not be more convenient to the human it replaces, and/or significantly reduces the quality of the product, and/or is trained unethically, and/or is environmentally damaging, and/or causes other forms of ethical/social damage, but you definitely can’t label all AI as being bad, and not even all generative AI as being bad. I am planning to make a project at some point about how more people need to do research and approach different cases without the immediate assumption that it’s bad ANYWAY besides the point. Honestly, I really do get the idea behind making AI tools for scratch, but at the same time, I think their logic is flawed. Again, we don’t know the nature of the AI tools yet, but already, I can tell that they’re really silly. The ST’s “guiding stars” for AI make very little sense to me. The first is “Creativity: Empower kids’ self-expression”. Which like. I don’t see how giving kids an AI that can do things for them will encourage their creativity, but okay. The second one is “Agency: Keep power and choice in kids’ hands” which. ??? I don’t even understand this one, like, what’s the AI gonna do????? Take over the kid’s life???????????? The third one is “Equity: Make it free, fair, inclusive, and accessible” which, again, huh???? How would that ever not be the case???? That’s a no-brainier, I feel like. The last one is “Community: Emphasize human connection and collaboration”, which again, I do not get at all. They seem to be hinting that they’ll be some kind of AI that helps you with coding problems, which I feel like does the opposite of emphasising human connection and collaboration, and I don’t even understand how that is possible, but okay. If you say so, ST. Like, idk. The forums are there. There are tutorials. I can guarantee that those emphasise human connection and collaboration far more than whatever AI helper they have now. I don’t really have much to say about their lines in the sand, apart from the one about being transparent, because they are being very mysterious and vague at the moment. So not very transparent at all. This whole AI thing just kinda feels so pointless. There are so many features and changes that so many people want, and genuinely who was asking for this? That whole article felt like it was written by AI, not gonna lie. It’s also just disheartening to see how AI is constantly being pushed onto kids at such a young age. The way I see it, and forgive me for being rather corny, everyone has a corridor in life. This corridor has an infinite number of doors, that have anything you can imagine on the other side. However, all the doors are locked, and there are no keys. Creativity and logic is figuring out how to open those doors. Using AI is having all the doors just leading to normal, average rooms, and being given the keys.
