before i start witing anything: the most important thing about this update and the discussion is THAT THERE IS NO GENERATIVE AI!!!! YOUR WORKS ARE NOT STOLEN!!! mostly saying all this here because there's been panic surrounding latest updates....which dont worry, it happens with every website which it has ever happened to. So what is really the update? Long story short, the only AI that will be applied is updates surrounding the search enginge. "Your works will be used" Is probably not to strip off what you've made or anything but to make it appear with proper keywords used when you search up something. If anything, i think itll only "steal" a project's ID number directly while everything else is untouched And honestly? I think it's a good thing!....But it also may spin into something not so great. As of now the scratch search has been pretty broken. Sometimes you write something right and the projects just...do not appear. at all. I'm not surprised they want this fixed. My only concern is that genAI is such a big tool that there is a chance that the algorithm's code is goign to be generated. Im an IT sudent and everyone besides me generates their codes (besides me which is why i am so slow) However, scratch as a coding website probably has a TON of experienced coders so the chances are low. as for naming it AI, well, almost every algorithm that does something is AI. Maybe not the codes you make in scratch directly but you get what I mean. It's just that the term AI has been popularized with the algorithms that are more accessible to the general public, such as chatGPT or Gemini. AI is not inherently bad, generative AI is. Sooo my conclusions are...dont let the CEO get too comfortable. Dont surrender and leave, as it does not do much, but don't fully accept this update either, otherwise more AI stuff will be added, especially the bad AI as it is what's popular at the moment. Make scratch team remember their words about genAI being unethical for thier site - cause it is. Scratch is aimed for CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS 8, not only that, it promotes creativity, which a computer laacks. If any genAI gets implimented in the future, children will be in danger. There aren't many spaces left for them on the internet. Scratch may not be the best but its SOMETHING, I geniuenly cant list any other safe-ish website for kids other than sctach. Lets have fun creating silly games thar's all!
