(there is a tldr) this post isn't going to reach a whole lot of people because im a tiny itty bitty scratcher but in case any of my followers wonder whats up :) okkk so... im sure that most people have already heard the ai news! i'm not going to rehash the points that have already been talked to death, so this post is mostly an update, but if you're not sure what i'm yapping about scroll down before we get into it, i wanna say that ai is NOT stealing your art--- right now, at least: https://www.scratchfoundation.org/ai ai will likely be implemented, but it's not being trained off of our posts for the time being. legally, though, it can start at any time, so i'm trying to get ahead of it. until there's an update on this, i'm going on hiatus. maybe scratch will see all the backlash and revoke the ai, in which case i'll come back! (probably with a massive art dump) or, maybe, nothing will change, and i'll hop off scratch forever. when i say "change" i mean something drastic, like a new ToS. even if scratch says they're not training ai off of our posts yet, they can start at any time and don't have to tell us, and until that changes, i won't feel super joyous. so this'll prolly be quite the long hiatus. i am VERY anti gen-ai. as an artist--- passionate about painting, writing of any genre, and acting--- and an enjoyer of ALL art forms, generative ai goes fundamentally against my principles. not only does it erase the very human spirit of creativity, it's literally KILLING our planet. to me, boycotting ai is an OBLIGATION. i can understand why scratch would implement ai, but i can't respect it at all. i don't feel comfortable posting my art when it could be trained on ai (even if it's not actively happening yet), nor is scratch going to feel the same to me after this announcement. this is really sad for me, because scratch is the only place i share my art and it's become a really important community for me since i joined. it's so special to interact with people here, enter dmcs, and befriend other artists my same age. i also only joined a few months ago so i feel like i just got started and now i'm being shoved away by all these changes. i'm genuinely very very sad about it sooooo..... i'm gonna be going on an indefinite hiatus. this isn't some huge, earth-shattering announcement as i don't have many followers, but it felt important to let people know! i have many friends i've made in the past 5 months on this site, and i didn't wanna leave them all hanging. also, i'm a very political person and it's super important to me that i speak out about things i care about whenever possible, and i LOVE discussing the ethics of ai, so i wanted to give my brief opinion on this :) basically, imma stop posting for a while, starting sometime in march! i'll keep making art, but i won't be sharing it here anymore. i think i might start posting in other places, and i'll link any new accounts i make either here or in my bio, if you're interested in seeing my art elsewhere wink wink. also, i'll still check my notifs, so feel free to keep chatting with me! there will be a few more posts i make after this: i have a dmce i've been working on for like two weeks atp, so i will be posting that, and when my own dmc ends, i'll owe people prizes. my dmc ends on march 15, and prizes might take a hot minute, so the hiatus will actually begin sometime between march and april. before then, though, the aforementioned few projects are the only things i'll be posting. i know april's forever away, i just wanted to make this announcement while the issue's still fresh :) also, my going on hiatus doesn't mean you can't interact with my content anymore. i'll still reply to comments and my dmc is still wide open! yes this is an ad i'm also gonna go through the tedious process of poisoning all my projects with nightshade and glaze, which i'll link here: https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/ https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/ i'm not unsharing anything, though, because the ai still has access to unshared projects and the alternative is deleting them entirely, which i'm NOT doing. EDIT: apparently poisoning images doesn't work super well so im kind of at a loss for what to do with my projects. im deeply uncomfortable with the small chance of ai getting trained off of them but also don't want to surrender to ai and take them all down. any help is greatly appreciated anywayyyyyy. preemptive hiatus announcement. i'm very sad, but this is maybe the thing that will push me to post on other platforms so... look forward to it i guess :) love u all, i'm gonna make the most of these next few months! ------------------------ if you weren't aware what was going on with scratch, here's some posts that explain it better than i can :) sorry i wish i had more links TLDR: im going on hiatus in like march/april bc i dont fw ai
