fr one of my favourite days, i hope you guys all have some yummy Australian lamb! obviously i want to acknowledge the reason many people don't celebrate Australia day and rather commemorate it or skip out on it altogether, i copied this passage from google. "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, along with many others, don't celebrate Australia Day on January 26th because it marks the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, symbolising the start of British colonisation, invasion, dispossession, violence, and cultural destruction for Indigenous Australians, not a unifying national beginning, making it a day of mourning or survival, often called "Invasion Day" or "Survival Day". It represents the beginning of systemic oppression, loss of land, and intergenerational trauma, rather than shared national pride, with calls to change the date to one that includes all Australians." ok back to a human talking, as much as this mega sucks, a lot of us do still celebrate it as a sign of progress and inclusion, so i hope all you Australians out there have a happy day with family and community regardless of how you choose to commemorate OR celebrate. <3
