Survive Teaser: The coffee in this tin mug is cold, but it’s the first thing I’ve tasted in twenty-four hours that didn't have the tang of salt or cordite. They ask me what it was like, expecting a map or a hero story, but how do you describe the world ending and beginning again on a single stretch of French sand? Silence died the moment we hit the water. Before the ramp even dropped, the big guns from the battleships behind us were punching us in the chest with every blast, and then the world simply turned into a meat grinder. It wasn't just gunfire; it was a solid wall of lead that sounded like a thousand hammers hitting a tin roof all at once. Everyone talks about the beach, but for most of us, the real battle was the tide. The Channel was angry that day, and we were weighed down with sixty pounds of gear, soaked and vomiting from the swells. When that ramp finally fell, if you didn't get hit by a bullet, you were fighting the ocean. I saw good kids stumble into a runnel and just disappear under the weight of their packs, and I’ll never forget the way the surf looked—it wasn’t blue or white, but a dull, heavy red. Once you actually hit the sand, the "plan" was gone. There were no squads or grand strategies left, just the man to your left and the man to your right, and the absolute certainty that staying still meant dying. We hid behind those iron "Hedgehogs" just to breathe, then tried to scramble up the shingle—that steep bank of loose stones that felt like running up a slide made of marbles while people threw rocks at your head. You couldn't see a "front line," only smoke, geysers of sand, and the muzzle flashes from the bluffs above.
