He was a recognized genius, mastering the Sharingan by age 8 and becoming an Anbu Black Ops member at age 11. Under the tutelage of Shisui Uchiha, he believed in serving the village above all else. The Uchiha Clan Downfall, The Uchiha clan, feeling marginalized, planned a coup. Itachi, serving as a spy for Konoha leadership, was caught between his clan and his village. When Shisui died, Itachi was forced by Danzo Shimura to choose. To prevent a catastrophic war, Itachi accepted a mission to wipe out his clan, with assistance from Obito Uchiha, while demanding that Sasuke be spared. He took on the burden of a traitor to ensure the village's safety and to make Sasuke strong enough to kill him and be hailed as a hero. Akatsuki and Final Battle Itachi joined the Akatsuki criminal organization to keep an eye on them and protect Konoha from within. He maintained a ruthless persona to push Sasuke toward hatred and power. Facing a terminally ill, blind, and weakened Itachi, Sasuke engaged him in a final duel. Itachi died smiling, having passed his Mangekyo Sharingan powers to Sasuke and ensuring his brother was safe from Orochimaru's curse mark. The truth of his sacrifice was later revealed to Sasuke by Obito. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, he was reanimated, aided in stopping the Edo Tensei, and finally expressed his love for Sasuke, confirming he would always love him regardless of his choices.
