John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator and singer from New Jersey born in 1917. At a party for his wife, his trumpet's bell was accidentally bent upward. He liked the sound so much he had a special trumpet made with a 45-degree raised bell, a customization that would become his trademark. (wikipedia)
