Note: numbers correspond to sources at the end I know I’m not some popular scratcher but I still feel like I need to get my opinions out about this chaotic AI situation and try to give out real information to those that need it. I’ve tried to ignore the drama, but we, the scratch art community, have taken this issue to ANOTHER LEVEL. First of all, for anyone that doesn't know, here is some background info: Scratch updated the ToS on January 22; this ToS had a clause that claimed the content of our projects for the use of training AI [1]. The art community freaked out about the potential for their art to train AI. Protests and boycotts started - some getting out of hand. Some people even left scratch altogether or migrated to a dupe site. However, ST has listed the implementation of Generative AI in Scratch as a rejected suggestion [2] and been transparent about how they are going to implement it - as a coding assistant [3]. They have stated that they will NOT be training this assistant on our data [4]. Scratch has also said that they value our opinion and will share more info with us soon [4]. Now my opinion: The community is overreacting. Mainly from misinformation and jumping to conclusions. The reality is, the moment you started to share your art on the internet, it was at risk of being fed to AI. Anyone can download the costume with the art and dump it into AI easily, even if there is no AI directly on the site. Eventually, every website will be feeding images and data to AI. Currently over 60% of websites have AI visitors most likely digesting information [5]. This number will grow exponentially in the coming years. So while you still can, don't worry about the future, and focus on making art and having fun. Keep sharing your art and making friends on this site. Thank you for reading.
