A she-cat curled her tail protectively over her kits. It was raining outside the den. Thunder banged in the sky. Her sobs were muffled by the drumming of the rain. “I’m sorry…” she whispered. “The twolegs…”she started to sob again. “I’m sorry…” She licked them some more, and after some time she stood up, and walked out. Later, two cats were doing a border check. “Rosethorn! ROSETHORN! Over here!” One screeched. “Ugh, what is it now,” replied Rosethorn, snarkily, as she walked over. But as she peered in the small nest, she gasped. “Kits!” The other one looked proud, and sniffed them. “They don’t smell of TreeClan,” Rosethorn smelled too. “Not any Clan. But.. should we take them back to camp? Leafbare is coming, and Dawnstar may not approve of two more kits.” The first one thought for a moment. “But if we leave them, they’ll die.” The kits were mewing loudly, needing to suckle. “Oh, all right.” Rosethorn and the other cat picked them up by their scruff, and trudged back to camp, through the rain. Dawnstar and Silversky, the medicine cat, huddled around the kits, murmuring. Only one had lived. One had died of hypothermia on the way back, because of the rain. Rosethorn and the other cat stood behind them, waiting. “Goldensong,” Their leader turned to the first cat. “Where did you find them?” “In a small nest right beside the TreeClan border.” Goldensong said back. Dawnstar nodded. Then, Silversky walked over. “The kit needs to suckle. She is only a few days old.” “Take her to the nursery,” Dawnstar replied. “And.. she needs a name.” “Ooh! I know!” Goldensong chirped. “How about Wolfkit, like a lone wolf?” Dawnstar nodded again, “Wolfkit it is.”
