Exploited for their small size and agility in mines and textile mills, children often faced severe injuries, respiratory illnesses, and, in some cases, abuse. Before the Industrial Revolution, clothing was far too expensive because of how slow the cloth production was. Not only that, but British colonies, especially in India produced cotton, and the European demand for cotton cloth was also growing rapidly. The Traditional hand methods and traditional spinner couldn't keep up with the high demand. Thread was originally created using the traditional spinner, which required two men to use, and it wasn’t efficient enough as it only created one thread at a time. This was starting to become a growing problem, as the demand for thread was high, and weavers were always in constant need of it. The first breakthrough came when John Kay created the Flying Shuttle in 1733. This machine significantly improved the weaving process, as it only required one person to use, and it could work twice as fast. Now weavers could make about 20-24 yards per day, wider cloth could be woven, and there were lower labor costs for the cloth production and industry. However, the traditional spinners assistants lost their jobs, because they weren’t needed after the Flying Shuttle was created.
