I sat up as my mom walked into the living room. "Oh, hey Iris, good morning. I'm packing the boxes into the back of the moving truck, you can go grab something from the kitchen, we only have a few slices of bread, and some fruit left. I know it's not the best breakfast, but I think it should be good enough, and then you can come out and help me with boxes." She said sounding a bit calmer than last night, although she was still quite nervous. "Mom, relax we still have 2 days to pack, that should be enough if we work together." I said hoping that would calm her down a bit. "Alright, alright, let's get on with packing then, unless you wanna sit here for eternity, and never leave." My mom said jokingly, although I kind of did. I got into a T-shirt, and jeans in what used to be my room, and went out to help unpack. I grabbed the box we packed last night, putting it into the back of the truck. For a few hours we continued, saying the occasional hello, or how are you doing to each other. Finally the sun went down, and we had packed at just over half of the boxes. "What do you wanna get for dinner tonight?" My mom asked like it was routine, which it basically was at this point. "Breakfast for dinner? I heard that one place started opening for dinner." I said not even knowing what to eat anymore. We had been doing this for about a week now, since most of our cooking stuff had been packed into boxes, and it seemed we had eaten at every restaurant within a 5 mile radius. "Alright, let's go" Said my mom before we hopped into the truck that used to belong to my dad. I finally realized that in 2 days we wouldn't see it again, as mom was selling it to her friends. We couldn't bring it on the plane with us to Alaska, it cost a lot of money to do so, and we didn't have that. I remembered all the times he would pick me up from class, and the countless times we went to the beach over the summer. Before I closed the door I saw a scratch on the side of my door, something that had always seemed so insignificant, but now it felt like a memory that I should've cherished. When we walked into the restaurant the smell of pancakes, and bacon hit me immediately. We hadn't ever been before, but I really wish we had. The atmosphere was cozy, and sweet, and memories of when I was 7, and sitting at the table came back. "Hello, welcome in, please follow me to your table." Said one of the people behind a counter cheerfully. We followed her to one of the tables near the back of the restaurant. "My name is Alex, I'll be your waiter for tonight, here are your guys' menus, and I'll be back to get your order." She said. "Thank you" My mom said, probably trying to sound less tired than she actually was. I looked at the menu, and decided I would get an omelet pretty quick. After about 2 minutes the waiter came back. She went over the usual questions about what we'd like to order, adding in the extra awesome, or excellent. "This place is nice" I say after a few minutes to break the silence. "Yeah, it really is." My mom said automatically, and said nothing more. Finally after a bit of looking around at the walls the waiter came out. "Here's your drinks, and I'll be out with food in a second" She said placing down the 2 cups of water, before running back into the kitchen. -❆- Continued Below -❆-

I'm really nervous about the move, and I'm sad about selling the truck, and I don't know what it's gonna be like in Alaska, and-" My mom cut me off before I could say anymore. "Iris. Calm down. I know the move is gonna be tough, but it'll be exciting. Besides it'll help to get a fresh start." She said softly. It the first time she's spoken to me like that in a week. "I know. I just never thought about it, I'm gonna miss the noise of the city here in San Francisco." I say, trying to sound convincing, although there was no way we were staying. The place tickets were booked, the car was being sold, and there was really nothing I could do about it. "I know it's gonna be hard, but your aunt is gonna be excited to have us." Mom replied, still speaking softly. After a bit the waiter returned with out food. My omelet simple, but good, and mom's waffles were topped with a bunch of whipped cream, and fruit. "Here you two are, let me know if you need anything." She said. We ate our food in mostly silence, not wanting to say anything else. After we were finished Alex came over. "Hello, here's your check, and was the food good?" She asked, still smiling brightly. "Yeah" Me, and mom replied in unison. "Amazing, just bring the check over to the counter once you're done." She said before running back to the kitchen. My mom brough the check to the counter. "Thank you, have a good night" Said the person behind the counter. "You too" My mom said. We jumped back into the truck, and drove home. "I'm nervous aswell." She said briefly, while I was fidgeting with a bracelet. "I don't know what it's gonna be like when we get there but, I know we'll be together." She followed. That made me feel a bit more certain about moving. "Yeah, alright." I replied just as we were pulling into the driveway. I ran back to my room, and got into my PJs. "Alright Reese, get to bed, I think you need it." Mom told me. I froze. She hadn't called me I since dad passed away. It felt kind of bittersweet. "Alright, you too." I told her. -❆- 5,467 characters TT I wrote 5,467 characters in like under an hour.
