February is Black History Month! To celebrate, I made artwork of my OC DJ Dysco, whose design was heavily influenced by 1970s black culture. DJ Dysco's design, obviously, was inspired by disco music (specifically the songs "Dancing Queen" by ABBA and "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton, though the latter is not exactly disco). Disco was a popular genre in underground dance parties in New York City around the 70s, especially with minorities like African Americans and LGBTQ+ people. The 70s saw the continuation of many civil rights movements from the 60s, with many United States citizens demanding equal rights for people of all races and genders. Almost reflecting the nature of the movements and societal shift, disco music served as a sort of counterculture against mainstream genres such as rock. DJ Dysco's outfit and hairdo are also inspired by the fashion trends of the 70s. She has an afro because during the Black Power movement, a lot of African Americans had this hairstyle because it reflected the idea of individual power and symbolized the rejection of assimilation and integration. Her clothes also reflect the Women's Rights movement, when many women began to reject traditional stay-at-home roles and wear less traditionally feminine clothing like dresses. Please let me know if I got anything wrong! I'm lowkey terrified of accidentally doing cultural appropriation so if something bothers you let me know
