The telephone is Nano calling to make sure Scratch is okay, as mentioned in the lore tidbits project. (link in notes and credits) It increases sanity a certain amount per second for 15 seconds, but you can't move during that time, so the monsters could get you, so it's balanced. Quitting in the middle of the call resets sanity to before the call and makes you lose some on top of that. Losing during the call makes an animation play where the phone rings on Scratch's table (or sofa or nightstand idk) and then stops.
This is my submission as a concept creator for the team. I'm pretty sure you can provide better sound effects, because I just used modified Scratch sounds. Things I'm Okay With Changing -The amount of sanity (to match the game) -The time it takes (to match the game) (also you need to change the time the dialogue is displayed.
