I’m a better cop than my sister. But something about this case refuses to add up. I’ve treated every fact as logically as I could. There’s nothing that connects these facts unless someone actually believed in magic, and I’ve never been that somebody. Perhaps it’s about time that I start being that somebody. “Pearl! I’ve gotten contact established with Doc Marthin. He’s on phone right now. I told him that I’d come get you.” Zedaph, resident mad scientist and goat hybrid of the complex, yells from outside the room, banging violently on the door. “You’re fudgin’ kidding!” I yell back, turning around so fast that I hear several of my bones crack. To which his response is to laugh. “I’m not kidding!” He responds, and I swear I’ve never moved so fast in my life. Doc Marthin. Esteemed scientist, Nobel Prize holder, many other science awards that I can’t name. If anyone can put sense to this case, it’s him. “Pearl Escent Moon on this end. Calling about the case of Bedubs O. Hundred, The Mad Hatter. Have you heard of it?” A noise of distracted confirmation echoes from the other end of the line, and several sounds that vaguely remind me of power tools. “There’s some very odd evidence that I could use your help connecting the dots on. Can you help me?” The tool noises on the other end pause. “You want… my help?” A gruff, scratchy voice asks. “Yes. I’m willing to offer compensation.” I reply, praying he doesn’t ask for too many zeros. “No need for payment. It’s a trifle, helping in a criminal case. Send me the details, and I’ll see what I can do.” The same gruff voice-Doc-offers, the briefest hint of an emotion that I cannot make out, sheltered behind his annoyed tone. “Thank you, sir, oh, thank you!” I exclaim, joy filling my tone as I struggle to reign in my composure. “Don’t get too excited. ‘I’ll see what I can do’ doesn’t mean I’ll magically solve it overnight.” If I didn’t know any better, I would say that Doc sounds almost happy to be bothered, but I do know better. Every article I read while doing research on the man pointedly says not to bother him when he’s working. I’m glad he agreed to help me, even though I did.
