We ran through grass that brushed our knees, Shouting just to hear the echo bounce back. The sun felt endless, And time didn’t matter- Only who could run the fastest Or swing the highest. Rain meant puddles, Mud on our shoes, And laughter that didn’t care Who was watching. We built forts out of blankets, pretended we were heroes, And believed every story we told. The old tree in the yard, Was our secret place. We carved our names, Swore we’d never forget. It still stands there, Holding our promises In its bark. Nights were for fireflies, Sticky fingers from melting popsicles, And the sound of crickets Singing us to sleep. Everything felt big, And we felt infinite- Like the world was ours to keep. Now those days live In flashes and dreams, Like pictures fading at the edges. But sometimes, When the wind smells like summer, It feels like we’re still there- Running, laughing, Never growing up.
