Global Illumination is one of those legendary graphics feats. Here, it's done with the classic method of radiosity, much like how Quake 2's lightmaps incorporated GI. Baking GI for larger scenes gets considerably more challenging, and it often requires the help of a PVS to eliminate non-visible radiosity transfers for free. Here, I've made do without PVS, as there isn't any sophisticated geometry here. You can perhaps see in this scene, that the white walls are starting to show via the bounced lighting.
