Hopepaw was found by Foxbreeze of Gorgeclan when he was a young kit. Feeling sorry for the young fox, Foxbreeze brought him back to camp. At the time, her father, Sharkstar, was leader, and he was severely strict and controlling. And when Foxbreeze presented the kit to him, he was tempted to k!// it. But when his deputy, Squashbite, offered the idea of having the fox kit to be a powerful ally, Sharkstar allowed him to stay. Foxbreeze named him Hopekit, in hopes that he would one day be accepted by clanmates. His kithood wasn't the easiest. When he was old enough, he was made an apprentice at 4 moons old, being apprenticed to Sharkstar so the leader himself could oversee his training. Foxbreeze, almost an adoptive mother to the kit, would always be present during these training sessions to make sure Hopepaw would be alright. When he was free, Hopepaw would visit a nearby river and look at his reflection for hours on end, wishing he was a cat instead of a fox so he could have at least a normal life within Gorgeclan.
