School kind of sucks, just ask any junior-higher, but my school especially sucks. Especially today, because the start of summer break was at the end of the week, so nobody was paying attention. This had one of two effects on our teachers. Either they would give up and let us talk and be on our phones during class, provided we actually did the homework, or they would dig in and start assigning detention and extra work left and right. Generally, the staff was equally split between sides, but for some reason, almost every single one of my teachers were the later. It was brutal, slouching through each class, trying to listen but really thinking of everything I would rather be doing right then. I ended up writing it down as a list on the corner of my notebook. It was more fun than listening to Mr. Mills explain the difference between DNA and RNA, plus it made the kids next to me chuckle, so it seemed like a pretty good idea. Until Mr. Mills strode up and snatched the paper away from my desk. “And what do we have here, Mr. Hillman?” He asked in a cool voice. I felt my cheeks burn as I shrank back, knowing, and dreading what was about to happen. “Writing notes in class is against school rules is it not?” He asked. “Yes.” I mumbled. “And you know the consequence?” He said. A few people in the back snickered. “Yes.” I said again. Mr. Mills turned with a flourish and began to read; “Things I would rather be doing than listening to this lecture from a superstitious old geezer who was probably born because of all that radiation from nuclear bomb testing. Playing video games Skateboarding Reading Sleeping Messing around somewhere else Getting my insides turned to liquid Swimming in a pool somewhere Getting shot 274,913,685,305 times Just being somewhere else. Drowning while being eaten by sharks Being burned at the stake Swallowing lava Slowly being crushed inside a massive grinding machine Having ants eat me from the inside out Being guillotined Tied to a concrete weight and dropped off a sea-side cliff Being hanged Becoming infected with cancer Becoming infected with rabies Becoming infected with any fatal disease Having my skin melted off Being attacked by giant, bloodthirsty, rabid wolves Getting dragged behind a truck at 75 mph Into a spike Skydiving without a parachute” Mr. Mills’ face turned bright crimson as he read, and the rest of the class laughing didn’t help matters. “Mr. Hillman, that will be another detention.” He said, voice quivering with anger. I doubted anyone had ever written a list that offensive to biology teachers. The highlight of my day always came during history. The teacher, Mr. Ryse, was my favorite teacher by far. He would never just lecture us on the wars or betrayals or anything, he would have us act them out, or create a movie on it or something. Some of the parents thought it was showing kids that it was okay for everything to be a joke, but not a single kid had failed Mr. Ryse’s class in ten years, so they let him teach the way he wanted. Personally, I thought it was brilliant. Most kids actually enjoy learning, but the way schools go about it just plain sucks. Nobody, not even adults, want to sit through five hours of various people lecturing them on subjects so boring and dull I’m sure that even if somebody who really liked the subject, like Albert Einstein, heard it, they would roll over and die. But, if you made learning fun and engaging, then everyone loved it. Call me crazy, but I think Mr. Ryse was smarter than even college professors. He was the only one who had this concept down. Today he had us performing a WWII style execution. I was bound and gagged, then stood up against one wall, while several others aimed nerf guns at me. Kevin stood tall at one corner, playing the part of the Nazi commander. Right as he gave the order to fire, all the other students jumped up from behind their chairs in an 'allied ambush,' and tackled and shot the enemies with nerf guns. Kevin blasted me in the face anyway.
so that was the prologue and chapter one of my book, RAPTORS. I know not a lot happens aside from character and worldbuilding, but this is a pretty long book, and I don't wanna rush it. the action slams in chapters three and four, but for now we get introduced to Jack, Kevin, and the world of RAPTORS. I may post another sneak peak later, I'm not sure, but I don't know that i will, I want people to read the book not the posts.
