Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu! Press the spacebar to move to the next slide. :) Who are the Afghan people? The Afghan people are the diverse and multi-ethnic population of Afghanistan, a beautiful landlocked country in south-central Asia bordering Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Afghanistan’s demographic is predominantly Muslim, with significant populations of Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks, speaking Persian and Pashto as main languages. Families value modesty, loyalty, and hospitality, honoring guests and the elderly through higher seating arrangements. Fathers are the breadwinners; mothers are the homemakers; and children show deep respect for their parents and elders. What is occurring in Afghanistan? Afghanistan is experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises following the political changes in 2021, economic collapse, lack of effective governance, drought, and international sanctions. Millions of Afghans do not know when they will have their next meal, with mothers, girls, orphaned children, people with disabilities, and the elderly being the most vulnerable. Recently, on August 31, 2025, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck near Jalalabad, in eastern Afghanistan. Approximately 2,200 people died due to the natural disaster, and thousands faced severe casualties. Numerous villages were flattened; numerous people were trapped in the rubble. In Kunar Province, temporary camps have been established to provide relief such as financial assistance, kitchen sets, hygiene kits, and blankets. Why is it important to raise awareness? One in three Afghans is starving every day, and globally 10.3 million Afghans remain displaced. Approximately 80% of that population constitutes women and children who require urgent assistance. Rising food prices and the increasing lack of income cause struggles for the overwhelming majority of families in Afghanistan, with ≈ 3.7 million children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years old suffering from acute malnutrition. The crisis is worse for the women-headed households, especially the widows, many of whom resort to skipping meals, sending children to work, and selling possessions to make ends meet. The Afghan people need your help to survive the winter. As Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “The Muslim Ummah is like one body; if one part is in pain, the whole body should feel the pain” [Sahih Muslim 2586d].
