• Despite looking like a tortoise, and being terrestrial, box turtles are actually more closely related to pond turtles. They have a hinged plastron that allows themselves to tuck inside their shell, for protection. • They live several decades, run on low caloric intake, and consume a variety of different resources, from fungi, invertebrates, to vegetation, with a strong, toothless beak, which makes them poisonous. Their colors are important for camouflage, even though they appear exposing. • Box turtles have naturally good eyesight, strong homing instincts, and semi-webbed claws that they use to spot, locate, and dig. Like most reptiles, they are cold-blooded and need to find suitable areas to thermoregulate. They also like regions near water, where they can wade and swim short distances. Finally, their shells are surprisingly regenerative and can heal from intensive burns.
