After a daring escape, she finds a group of strange cats who first treat her kindly, but soon force her into servitude and mistreat her. Growing weak and ill, Diamondshine is rescued by a compassionate cat, but their journey back to her clan is interrupted by a dog attack, where her rescuer sacrifices themselves to save her. Heartbroken and lost, Diamondshine nearly gives up, but a new friend encourages her and helps her return to Dewclan. Though her helper does not stay, Diamondshine finds the strength to start anew with her clan, forever changed by her trials and the friends she made and lost along the way.
Cats/other characters: Diamondpaw / Diamondshine – The protagonist, a silver-furred apprentice cat from Dewclan. The Hawk – The bird that captures Diamondpaw and takes her to its nest. Ginger Tom – The leader of the group of strange cats who first welcomes, then mistreats Diamondpaw. Calico She-cat – A member of the group who initially acts kindly but later becomes harsh. Other Group Cats – Various unnamed cats in the group who participate in Diamondpaw’s mistreatment. Black-and-White Tom – The compassionate cat who finds Diamondpaw sick, rescues her, and tries to help her return home. Dogs – The pack that attacks Diamondpaw and her rescuer, leading to the rescuer’s sacrifice. Golden She-cat – The encouraging cat who finds Diamondshine at her lowest, helps her recover, and brings her back to Dewclan. Dewclan Cats – Diamondshine’s original clanmates who welcome her back (not individually named in the prologue).
