This is one of my chickens called Diamanda (Mandy for short) We got her in February, Valentines day! She is a rescue chicken, so she is quite scrawny-as she would have been couped up in a tiny cage with about 10 other chickens, and all of them would have been very bored, so they would all peck each others feathers out all the time, resulting in blood, bare skin and sometimes death. They are called battery hens, and it is sometimes illegal to keep them in cages of a particular size, as it would hurt them. You can find websites and company's that rescue ex-battery hens, so they can be adopted, and grow their feathers, and live a happy and free life! We went to British Hen Welfare Trust for ours, and this is our 3rd generation of rescue chickens! When they start to grow their feathers back, or when they are moulting, their feathers only look like little hedgehog spikes, which is why I call it their hedgehog stage, and why-if you look closely at the picture, her crop looks blue and spikey! It is really heartwarming when they start to learn to trust you, by feeding out of your hands, letting you pick them up, giving them hugs or when they affectionally and curiously peck your clothes! Any questions I will answer in the comments or on my profile commenting. That is why I love chickens, and why I keep them! :)
Just a thank-you to my mum and dad for getting chickens in the first place, and giving them a new life.
