[Preview: The wind whistled through the trees, and Kiera’s short yellow hair blew over her face. She giggled, brushing the frosty crystals out of her curls. Kiera reached out her chubby fingers, stroking the shivering pines free of their silvery headdresses. She toddled toward the frozen stream, but Monica caught her and dragged her back. Kiera scowled. Why was Monica always ruining her fun? She didn’t need taking care of; she was special. Monica thought Kiera was her daughter, but she wasn’t. Kiera belonged to the forest. Monica was patting Kiera’s hair down now, and reprimanding her for running off into the forest alone. But Kiera’s mind had wandered, and all her attention was on the little squirrel burying its nuts under the large oak. She smiled. She would go play with the squirrel once Monica was done talking. The little fellow’s nose twitched deftly, and he darted off into the woods. It took all of Kiera’s willpower to stop herself from darting after it. Her fingers began to curl, and she sent mental messages pleading Monica to stop her lecture so she could run, far, far away into the horizon. But Monica never understands, and never will. Kiera’s eyes glazed over. A vision. A tall, bulky shadow loomed over a small, brown, rodentlike creature. Was that a bear? Was that the same squirrel she saw earlier? The shadow crouched, and began stalking its target. It was hunting. Then the scene shifted, and Kiera saw a log. Over a river.
