I really need to stop doom scrolling. I feel the heavy but calming weight on my legs as I stroke Jelly, my cat. I gently push her off my bed and sit up. My little sibling, Blake, comes running in. “Kyle, Kyle!”, they shout, skidding to a halt by the side of my bed. They hold out something in the palm of their hand. “Look, the tooth fairy left me one pound!”. The coin glistens in the sunlight. “Wow!” I say, “That’s awesome! Want to come to the shops with me today, to spend it?”. “Yay! You're the best brother ever!” Blake says excitedly, before running off to show dad. I smile at Blake’s use of ‘brother’. Even though I came out as trans four years ago, it still brings me so much happiness to hear them say that. I start to get ready for school. I comb through my curly, dark, short hair and shove it in my favourite blue beanie. I tug on my old jeans and tie the laces on my converse. Awkwardly, I pull on my binder, wishing that I didn’t need it, and then layer three t-shirts. After putting on my denim jacket, I clip on the final piece- my tail- before heading downstairs for breakfast. Iz and Blake are sitting at the table, Iz scrolling on her phone, and Blake still proudly showing off their shiny coin. Dad is whistling a happy tune, flipping pancaked at the oven. “Morning Wolf!” he says when he sees me. Wolf, being one of my pawtypes, has become his nickname for me. “Hi dad.” I respond, pouring myself a glass of orange juice. “Excited for school?” “Meh, kind of. Bad start with double science, but I’ve got music third, so ya know.” I say, as he puts a pancake on each of our plates. I have loved music ever since I got a guitar for my eighth birthday. My favourite artist ever is Cavetown. Go figure. We’ve barely started eating when there is a knock on the door. I grin, knowing exactly who it is. I rush to the door, flinging it open. Sure enough, it’s Oak, my boyfriend. I kiss him on the cheek before quickly running to the dining room to grab my bag. “Leaving for school already? You’ve barely eaten.” My dad has an anxious look on his face. “It’s fine. I’ll get something on the way there.” “Kyle.” My dad responds sternly. I got an eating disorder a year and a bit ago. I had lots of help, and I’ve sort of overcome it now. I still struggle, but it’s better. My dad still worries. “I promise, dad.” I reassure him. “Anyway, Oak understands. He’ll make sure I eat.”. “Okay, I trust you. Have fun at school!” “I won’t.”, I reply, smiling. Me and Oak run to the bus stop, not even stopping to say ‘hello’. We are determined not to miss the bus and be late to school.
