The 10000 Series is the next-generation LVCTA train, and will enter revenue service in 2029. The full 10000 Series fleet will contain both Light Rail Vehicles and Heavy Rail Vehicles. The Light Rail Vehicles will replace the 4000 Series Light Rail Vehicles on the Orange Line, with the 4000 Series trains starting retirement in 2029, and is expected to be completed by 2030, however the 4000 Series will occasionally run as backup if needed. The Heavy Rail Vehicles will replace the entire fleet of 6000 Series, 7000 Series, and 8000 Series trains on the system, with a slow phaseout of the existing fleet. The retirement of the 6000 Series will begin in 2030, and will be completed in 2032. The retirement of the 7000 Series will begin in 2040, and be completed by 2042. The retirement of the 8000 Series will start in 2050 and be completed by 2055, and the 9000 Series won't start retirement until at least 2070, with the earliest completion date of 2076. As the older trains retire, there will be more 10000 Series trains to replace them. The 10000 Series will be the first trains on the LVCTA to have open gangways. The trains will be constructed as 4-car pairs, with open gangways connecting all 4 cars. A full-length 10000 Series train will have 8 cars, the same as most of the other Heavy Rail lines. Because of the 4-car pairs, there will not be any 6-car long 10000 Series trains. These two changes for the 10000 Series will significantly boost the capacity of one full-length train. The Light Rail Vehicles will not have open gangways. The expected lifespan of the 10000 Series trains is around 60 years, with the earliest date to start retiring the first trains being 2090, and the earliest date that the whole 10000 Series fleet is retired is 2100, due to the size of the fleet. We believe that several of these changes will make your passenger experience better. By making several crucial changes, such as prioritizing more spacious 8-car trains, we are helping make your ride a more enjoyable experience. Taking public transit shouldn't just be something you do to commute to work every day, it should be a feeling, and that is the mission that we want to accomplish with the 10000 Series.
