AN EXCERPT FROM THE FIRST SHORT STORY IN THE NEXT 'THE PARK FILES' VOLUME! I HOPE YOU ENJOY! ‘Sometimes.’ Gabriel thought as he listened to Lily squeal loudly in delight as she watched the puppet show. ‘Being a brother seriously sucks.’ Gabriel was the sole caretaker of his little sister Lily, ever since his mum died in a plane crash. Gabriel and Lily were also on the plane but managed to make it out alive. They were 2 of only 17 survivors on board. There was a total of 136 deaths that day. And it’s not like his dad was any help either. A complete and utter slob, all he did was eat and watch TV. The only notable talent he had was the ability to take up three seats on the couch at once. Gabriel and Lily were at Dorry’s Dream Park, the latest hit theme park in the sacbdtib’r enos osalg. They were there because Lily, who went through children’s shows like clockwork, had just begun her latest obsession with the show that had been around almost as long as Gabriel had been alive, Dorry’s Dream World. Despite being almost ten years senior to his little sis, he had to admit, when he wasn’t rushing around, trying to get tow work on time or cleaning or making sure Lily had lunch for school or anyone of the dozen other things that were expected of him, the show certainly was captivating, and sometimes Gabriel caught himself sitting next to his little sister, watching a show designed for five-year-olds. A sudden trumpet blast knocked Gabriel out of his thoughts. The show was over, and a voice, the voice of Dorry the Dinosaur, came over the speakers. “Hey everyone! Show’s over, but there’s loads more to explore within the park! Please go to the exits on your right, and thanks for watching the show! And, as always, remember to Dream big!” ‘Dream big.’ Gabriel thought as he led Lily out the huge doorways, framed by fake vines and leaves. ‘I wish.’ Ever since the death of his mother, Gabriel didn’t have times for his own goals of becoming a professional basketball player. He had to look after Lily, and if he wasn’t looking after Lily, he was at work. And since he only made minimum wage, it’s not like he had any money to spend on himself, especially considering how his “dad” took half of his pay check, claiming it was “only right, considering all I’ve done for you.” ‘What have you ever done for me?’ Gabriel had thought at the time. ‘Taken up the whole couch?’ Gabriel led Lily out of the building and into the sunlight, which streamed down on their faces. “Alright, Lily.” Gabriel said, turning to her. “You ready to go?” “Yep!” Lily cried, and Gabriel breathed a sigh of relief. He just wanted to go home. Once they got home, he would have half an hour to relax before he had to get ready for his next shift. They headed off to the gate, and were almost there, almost free when Lily yelled, “Gaby! Gaby! Can I have that? Gabriel groaned. They were so close. There goes his afternoon. He turned his towards whatever it was that she wanted. A toy Dorry the Dinosaur sat in the window of one of the merchandise stores lining the cobble path. A sign hung above it, its message displayed in bright green letters against a white background. ‘The Do-Do-Dorry.’ It read. ‘The perfect toy for all your parenting needs.’ The sign sparked Gabriel’s attention, so he led Lily over to the store.
