Hi guyss also I decided to pot chapters 1-8 today bc I originally made them but didn't post them lol so yeaaa :D chapter 5 btw srry for the long wait~ Chapter 5: Web of Shadows For a moment, Detective Lila Hart could only stare at Eleanor Blackwood. Alive, trembling, eyes darting to the door as if unseen watchers lurked just beyond it. The last heir of the Blackwood fortune looked nothing like the imperious recluse the town gossiped about—her silk gown was tattered, her hair unkempt, and her hands shook as she gripped the candle. “You’re supposed to be dead,” Lila said flatly. Eleanor gave a hollow laugh. “Would that it were so simple. Disappear, and they’ll only hunt harder. Die, and they’ll claim everything. I had no choice but to vanish.” Adrian Cole stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “She’s telling the truth. The Blackwood estate holds records, evidence, leverage against people who control Ravenwood in the shadows. A cult, a council—call them what you like. They’ve existed for generations.” Lila crossed her arms. “And Thomas? Did they kill him, or did you?” Eleanor’s face twisted in grief. “Thomas was reckless. He wanted to expose them openly. He thought he could threaten them. He was wrong. They silenced him, as they will silence me, and you, if you keep digging.” The chamber seemed to press in tighter, the candlelight flickering like it feared what it illuminated. On the walls, photographs of the mayor, the town magistrate, and several wealthy families glared back at them. In the center, circled in red ink, was Eleanor’s own face. Lila leaned closer. At the bottom of the collage, scrawled hastily: “The clock tower. Midnight. When the bell tolls, they gather.” Her gut clenched. “So that’s where they meet.” Eleanor grabbed her wrist with surprising strength. “Detective—you don’t understand. They don’t just meet. They decide who lives and who vanishes. Ravenwood is theirs.” Before Lila could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed from the hidden passageway. Slow. Steady. Getting closer. Adrian stiffened. “We’ve been followed.” The candles quivered, their flames bending as if in a sudden draft. Eleanor’s grip tightened. “It’s too late. They’re already here.” The footsteps stopped just outside the chamber. A voice, calm and resonant, spoke through the darkness: “Detective Hart. Bring Eleanor with you. We can still make this easy.” Lila raised her revolver, her eyes darting between Adrian, Eleanor, and the doorway. Easy? Nothing about this was easy. The passage creaked. A shadow moved. And then the chamber was plunged into darkness.
