RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER I PART I ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Baby Queen blares through my room as I stare into my ceiling. My New Kids on the Block banner is falling in the right corner. I’ll fix it later. The summer sun isn’t as blinding as always since my curtains are closed. My t-shirt is curled up past my belly button, and my fan blows cool air on my stomach. There’s a knock at the door. “Who is it?” I call, but they must not hear me over the stereo. I turn down the volume, “Who is it?” I say again a little louder just in case. The door opens quietly, and I can tell from the shoes that it’s probably one of the maids. “Dinner is served ma’am”, she says carefully. As if I’d yell at her. Who am I, my parents? “Tell Mother and Father I’ll be right down” I say, but she knows I don’t mean it. I hate family dinners. I hate that my parents think that after years of neglecting me they can sit me down and stare at me. I hate my family. “Okay ma’am, hurry. I think their upset.” And just like that she’s gone. I know that the maids are trained to be quiet and swift, but it can be creepy sometimes. I pulled down my shirt and turn off my lights. I’m so glad my parents don’t come into my room. They’d have one of the maids take down my posters and fairy lights immediately in replace for an imperial bed and some antique furniture. My feet slump down the stairs and my arms cling to the railing. The chandelier is on and candles are lit. I feel like I’m going on a date with my parents. I sit down at the long table that has 9 to many chairs. “So, what’s the news?” I ask without a hint of excitement. My parents stare at me confused, “What news? We can’t just have dinner with our daughter?” “Sure, you can. Just tell me her number and I’ll send her over.” I say sarcastically. “That will be quite enough from you, young lady! Your mother and I just want to sit down and talk to you, is that so much to ask?” My father looks at me like I put the forks on the wrong side of the 5 different bowls. “Fine.” I say, but I know there’s news. There’s always news. “I feel as if we should talk about your education.” My mother says. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~PART I FIN~
