It can move one square in any direction: forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally. The goal of the game is to trap the opponent’s king so it cannot escape, which is called checkmate. Queen The queen is the most powerful piece. It can move any number of squares in a straight line in any direction: forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally. Rook The rook moves any number of squares, but only in straight lines: forward, backward, left, or right. Bishop The bishop moves any number of squares diagonally. Each bishop stays on the same color squares for the entire game. Knight The knight moves in an L shape: two squares in one direction and then one square to the side. It is the only piece that can jump over other pieces. Pawn Pawns move forward one square, but they capture pieces one square diagonally. On their first move, they can move two squares forward instead of one. If a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted to another piece, usually a queen.
