Note: [Checkpoint] means that at this point in the story, there is a checkpoint. There are also checkpoints at the border between areas. Area 1: The Sunbaked Shallows (tutorial)- YELLOW This is a desert/beach area with sand and wind enemies (but very few). Here you are introduced to your dash, glide and dive abilities by a wise old Yellow Citizen, the last of the Sunflower Tribe. He urges you to continue on your journey and admits that you’ve surprised him; the Reds (you are a Red) are rumored to be aggressive and hostile. [Checkpoint] The two of you are attacked by a Sand Wisp, but you manage to defeat it, gaining entry into the Echoing Wilds. Area 2: The Echoing Wilds (crossroads)- BLUE This is an overgrown, maze-like cave area with insect enemies. There is a checkpoint in the center. You can head through the sewers to reach the Sunken Sewers (green), head into the mountains to reach the Magma Hollows (orange) or go deeper into the caves to reach the Poisonous Bog (purple). There is also a young traveler in the Wilds, a starry-eyed Blue who sees the best in everyone. He asks the character for advice, then assures them that he already knows the obvious stuff, like…and then he explains the entire level structure to you lol. Essentially, each colored area (green, purple, orange) is blocked off by a barrier of its own color, and you can only pass through this barrier by equipping its respective colors of primary abilities. You can only switch abilities at checkpoints. Yellow is the dive ability, Blue is the dash ability, and Red is the glide ability. Once you’ve completed one secondary area, you’ll meet a surly Brown blacksmith- a pilgrim from a distant land- at the Crossroads. He doesn’t trust you or the Blue- his family was killed in a war between the Browns and the other Color States- but he agrees to improve your weapon. You can now equip one Secondary Ability at a time, in addition to your two primaries. These won’t help you cross barriers, but they’re useful in combat. Secondary Abilities- Green, Orange and Purple- are unlocked by completing their respective areas. Like Primary Abilities (Blue, Red and Yellow), you can only change your equipped Secondary at checkpoints. The blacksmith grows fonder of the Blue as your adventure goes on (1 cutscene after each area completed) and by the time you go fight the Greyscale they have more of a father-son relationship.
