“ let us leave now, today we can strike! “ Gigantism What causes gigantism in cats? Gigantism in cats is typically caused by the excess production of growth hormones. Having gigantism at birth (congenital) is exceptionally rare, as it typically occurs in older males, although Halcyon will start growing very young, although he will be born about (if not a little bigger) the same size as other kits. When a tumor grows on a cat’s pituitary gland, it can cause growth hormones to be released. This is known as pituitary gigantism, which is a rare condition in cats and is more common in older diabetic cats. However, there are many other types of gigantism, such as growth dysplasia, klinefelter’s syndrome (which can cause an abnormally sized tom), and constitutional large size. (probably the type Halcyon has.) https://hospital.vetmed.wsu.edu/2022/09/15/momo-a-giant-cat-to-grow-no-more/#:~:text=September%2015%2C%202022,a%20long%20and%20comfortable%20life. What health problems can this cause? In the situation when a cat has pituitary gigantism, the cat would typically never stop growing, which causes possibly fatal conditions. However, in Halcyon’s case, he’s going to just have a large size. It will not particularly be related to any health problems, rather be caused by selective breeding of large breeds. While his type of gigantism isn’t linked to any health problems, his large size can be bad for him. Kinds of potential health problems include hip dysplasia or arthritis (increased weight = more strain on joints), heart diseases (such as HCM), metabolic disorders, and respiratory stress. How will this affect them? Halcyon will be particularly affected by his large size. Effects include asthma (respiratory stress), arthritis later in life, and possibly diabetes mellitus. Information/research on these is provided below. Asthma: Halcyon will be affected by his asthma especially in new/greenleaf. Asthma is a respiratory condition that is typically characterized by the narrowing or inflammation of air passageways, typically caused by an allergic reaction. In their case, this would be pollen. Key symptoms typically include coughing, wheezing, and breathing difficulties. Coughing usually sounds like harsh, dry coughs, and cats with asthma tend to exhibit a crouched, hunched posture with the neck extended to try and clear their airways. Cats with asthma can also have lethargy at times. Arthritis: Arthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is a common, chronic, and progressive condition typically in senior cats. It causes chronic pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility due to worn-down cartilage often in the knees, hips, and backs. As Halcyon ages, he will have reduced mobility (difficulty climbing, running, or really anything movement-oriented), sleep more, grooming changes (matted, tangled fur because he cannot reach places and excessively cleaning joints), and stiffness and slow movement. Diabetes Mellitus: Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the body cannot properly produce or respond to the hormone insulin. This results in elevated levels of glucose, which is the main source of energy in the body. Just like humans, cats need glucose for energy. However, glucose needs insulin to “unlock” the cell doors. Glucose is a vital piece of energy in a person or cat’s body, and without it, it can cause serious health problems. Halcyon will probably have Type I diabetes, which is when blood glucose levels are high because of a decrease in insulin production. The most common factors in cats with diabetes are obesity, increasing age, male gender, and the lack of physical activity. In Hal’s case, he developed diabetes because of his large size. It won’t develop immediately, rather begin in mid warriorhood. The most obvious signs of diabetes are decreased weight despite a good appetite and increased thirst and urination. In both types of diabetes, the cells in the body are unable to absorb glucose from the blood and become starved of energy. To get the energy they need, the body turns to other sources such as breaking down fats and proteins to feed these glucose-starved cells. This breakdown results in weight loss. Halcyon will struggle with weight loss and incredible thirst, as well as lethargy from this as well as he ages. https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-diabetes#:~:text=The%20most%20important%20risk%20factors,loss%2C%20despite%20an%20increased%20appetite.
