Dusk sat by her nest, waiting. For what? She was alone. Alone. No one had her back - not her parents, her siblings, her friends, if she even had any. She had only herself. She sighed quietly. What was the point of complaining? There were other cats who had bigger problems than her. But it still hurt. It hurt… what was that? Something pinched her paw. Dusk looked down to find two small hermit crabs staring up at her. One with a pale orange, almost sandy colored shell, and the other with a light blue shell. “Alone,” she whispered. “We’re all alone.” The blue-shelled crab crawled closer to her and tucked its head in its shell. The orange crab gave its friend a look of disdain and began to back away. The first crab didn’t move. The other crab reluctantly crawled over to its friend. “Alone.” “We don’t have to be alone, do we? We have each other.” “We don’t have to dwell in our solitude and isolation…” “You know what? I think that’s going to be your names.” Dusky tucked her head on her paws and began to drift into sleep. She wasn’t alone.
