Click the green flag. Just kidding! There's no flag, just a bunch of green pixels... or is it? Let's discuss the nature of symbols in society, and ultimately conclude that such discussion has little purpose. A flag is often described as a symbolic piece of cloth, with the purpose of portraying a message. For example, a square flag of pure white signals surrender from conflict. However, the term 'flag' often instead refers to the design itself; when one refers to a 'country flag', they are typically describing the symbol that represents a country, not a single physical cloth. It's in this we may understand that the term 'flag' is merely a concept that encompasses multiple agreed-upon applications. Then why would it be unreasonable to define a group of pixels on a screen as a 'flag'. The only necessity in objectivity is that such definition is universally accepted. For this reason, a pedantic examination, such as this one, is not only meaningless, but obtrusive. It ignores the very purpose of language- to define universal ideas- by arbitrarily imposing different, less helpful concepts with the naive belief that true objectivity has been achieved.
