The RMS Empress of Ireland was a passenger ship built in 1906. It carried passengers across the Atlantic Ocean between Canada and the United Kingdom and was known for regular, reliable journeys. On May 29, 1914, the ship was travelling along the St. Lawrence River in thick fog, making it hard to see nearby ships. Another ship, the SS Storstad, was close by. The two ships accidentally collided, causing serious damage to the Empress of Ireland. The ship sank very quickly, in about 14 minutes. Around 1,012 people lost their lives, while about 465 were rescued.
