Prologue Sandkit and Umberkit tumbled out of Blossomclan’s nursery, giggling and playfighting. “I tagged you!” Sandkit sequeled. “No way!” Umberkit insisted. “Would you kits keep it down over there?” Larchblaze: a yellow-orange cat with deep green eyes, sighed by the freshkill pile. “It’s ok, Larchblaze, they’re still so young!” Quailfeather: a dark brown cat with tan markings defended beside him. “They shouldn’t know better.” “Kits these days know absolutely no respect, when we were young-” Larchblaze started. “Yeah, yeah, you respected your elders or whatever, did work, climbed up a hill both ways. We get it.” Sandkit said sarcastically. “But, to be frank, your time was like a hundred moons ago. These days are different.” The yellow tom shot back in utter disbelief as Sandkit and Umberkit were pulled into the nursery by two paws. Umberkit looked at Sandkit with wide eyes. “Why did you say that???” “Well-” Sandkit began, but couldn’t finish. Birchfall and Sagepelt sat lecturing Sandkit and Umberkit. “Those elders worked hard to drive this clan! They've done so much to build a future for us, and you dare disgrace them?” Birchfall shouted. “I thought I taught y’all better. What a shame. I obviously went wrong somewhere when raising you two.” Sagepelt scolded. Umberkit sat there tearfully looking into Sagepelt’s eyes. “I-I’m s-sorry m-mom… I really didn’t mean it.” He apologised profusely. Sandkit, on the other hand, was rolling her eyes, saying, “Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Soon, the parents' rant faded, and Sandkit was daydreaming. She thought of the day she would leave the nursery and become an apprentice. She wouldn’t have to listen to boring lectures; instead, she would patrol the borders and hunt. The elders would see how good she could hunt, how she could bring the most plump prey straight to them. She imagined Larchblaze shocked at her plump pigeon, his favorite prey- and he would say, “Wow! I really doubted you!” She couldn’t wait to see that. “---hey-hey!-HEY!” Suddenly, she felt a jab towards her stomach. “HEY!” Sandkit snapped out of her daydream, stunned and very annoyed. “Were you even listening, Sandkit?” Birchfall accused. “Huh… Oh! Yes, yes, they are privileged because they helped the clan before we were born, yap yap yap..” Sandkit rolled her eyes. “Ok,” said Sagepelt, looking at Sandkit suspiciously. “Meeting adjourned.” “And stop messing with the elders,” Birchfall added. “I understand,” Umberkit sighed. When Sandkit ran out of the nursery giggling, Sagepelt looked at Umberkit and sighed. “Please, keep that she-cat in line.” “Yes, ma’am.”
