Aso, several miners were attacked by mysterious insectoid creatures, later classified as the dragonfly nymph Meganulon. The creatures soon began molt into dragonflies known as Meganula. The swarm soon spread across the nation and began preying on anyone unlucky enough to cross paths with them. Meanwhile, dozens of reports of UFOs suddenly came in from all over Asia. Tracing one of the UFOs from the remote location of Adonoa Island in the Bering Sea, a team of scientists were sent to investigate. Vast amounts of nuclear waste were discovered, but also a huge nest of what appeared to be gigantic hatched eggs. That December, an entire flock of gigantic pterosaur-like kaiju, dubbed 'Rodan' arrived in Japan to feast on the thousands of Meganula. Entire cities were devastated by the cyclone-force winds generated by their wings. Despite their great numbers, one by one, each Rodan was picked off by targeting their relatively fragile wing membranes, until only two remained: one male, one female, a mated pair. The air force began a relentless assault on the kaiju, however, thanks to their unbelievable speed of over mach 3, both Rodans escaped alive, albeit one with an injured wing. After the two pterosaurs made their nest in Mount Aso, the military devised a scheme: they would plant explosives in the mouth of the volcano and trigger an eruption, burning the Rodans alive. The plan was a success, when the injured one's wings faltered and fell into flames of the pyroclastic flows, the other, unwilling to live without its mate, join it, as both beasts perished. And that was thought to be the last Rodan, at least, up until 1993. A series of earthquakes triggered a massive eruption, and from the crator emerged a new Rodan: this one dwarfing the previous ones and much, much more powerful, almost rivaling that of Godzilla himself.
Toho This design was mostly based on the Heisei and Final Wars versions. I preferred the more brownish-red colouration than the more bright reds like Fire Rodan or Final Wars. I also gave him a variant of the wind-breath, but rather than smoke, I changed it to be more like a super high-pressure jet of air. Personally, I think Rodan should be a rival to Godzilla, like in Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster, rather than a jobber like in Final Wars (tbf everyone except Monster X was a jobber in Final Wars) or the Monsterverse. In Vs. Mechagodzilla II, he was portrayed as the scrappy underdog which is pretty cool but I don't like how short he is compared to his Godzilla. I also think giving him a generic beam attack was a bad move, like literally every kaiju in the 'Heisei Vs.' series except Biollante (kinda) and those random kaiju no one remembers like Shokirus has a beam attack. Instead I think giving him a more unique power would've been more interesting.
