Chart shows are cool. Problem: Waiting sucks. So in October 1998 MTV Thanosia made a show dedicated ONLY to Number 1s. It was called MTV 1, where the show complies songs that are number one in domestic charts, international charts, MTV's own charts, and request charts worldwide, including the channel's most recent Dial MTV edition. Does it work? Maybe? But like many experimental shows MTV launched during that period. It stuck anyway. MTV 1 is broadcasted every Monday and Friday in the evening. Later reduced to only Fridays in 2001 when the channel was renamed to "MTV Number Ones" and churned out less vidoes than it used to be. It kinda blended in with "Music Television", "Dial MTV" and "MTV Top 20". You would stumble into MTV Number Ones and didn't notice at all. The novelty of a show like this has worn out... Yet, it kept going. Simply because it was cheap and fills airtime. This is the kind of logic Peleri would apply to all of their channels: New idea -> Gets outdated/unpopular -> Still runs anyway. Shows can be axed but for shows like this keep running to this day. In 2007 the show was renamed back to MTV 1 and soon with the age of social media, number 1 songs can be accessed easily, even via MTV's own website. But once again... MTV 1 kept going. In 2020 MTV launched a dedicated "Number 1s week" to spare airtime previously filled by shows suspended by the COVID-19 pandemic, it showed every single number 1 song MTV has aired throughout its 29-year history. The lack of MTV 1 branding here made people forgot that a dedicated show exists and airs every week on the same channel. Aside from that... MTV 1 remained unchanged, despite MTV offering to watch videos on demand from their own website and on YouTube, and even if that doesn't exist, there's always "MTV Most Wanted" where snippets of the most requested songs are aired every hour. The problem was always the idea - People don't realize that No.1 isn't always the best one for most people. People can like No.2, or No.3, or No.87. It's fun waiting patiently for the No.1 to come, but it's not when No.1 comes immediately. Still, people still like the idea of MTV 1 - where the pinnacle of today's music are all under one roof. That's the selling point of this program, and it wouldn't surprise some if that's the reason why MTV 1 still exists. --------------------------------------------- Paramount Skydance Logo is from 2021 onwards, inspired by the 1998-2001 and 2019-2021 logos
