Wings Of Fire The Darkest Night Prologue A dragon was hiding in a deadly storm. Sandstorm shivered; he’d caused this–caused this deadly mix of winter and sand. It was ironic that he’d created what his name was–-but mixed with snow and cold. He knew that the storm was headed for the Forgotten Isles, and he had to save them—even though he couldn’t go past the Barrier or he’d be trapped there forever. Sandstorm had to atone for the spell that had gone awry, somehow. He still didn’t know how the invulnerability spell had gone wrong. His daughter, Caracal, had spilled the ink he was using in his enchanted scroll, and when he’d fixed the parchment, the spell had already been cast. The storm would ruin everything. “You’ll come back, won’t you, Father?” Caracal asked. *Oops, I forgot to tell her about how the Forgotten Isle’s spell was cast.* Sandstorm thought ruefully. He knew his daughter would be alone for the rest of her life, since her mother–and Sandstorm’s mate, Sunset, had disappeared only hours after Caracal’s hatching. “I’ll come back…sunshine.” Sandstorm lied. He couldn’t tell his daughter about the spell on that island, or she’d want to go with him. He wanted Caracal to have a normal life, to not think about who Sunset was related to…about why Caracal had LeafWing wings, and why Queen White Oak hated them. * * * Before Sandstorm left, he had to make sure that Caracal would at least be able to live as long as it would take for someone to find a way out of the Forgotten Isles, since she’d heard him talk about the spell while he was asleep. So he cast a spell on his daughter. “I enchant you to stay this age for as long as it takes for some dragon to arrive and free the dragons captive in the Forgotten Isles. This spell cannot be reversed by any animus except me, and will be removed when that dragon gets to the Isle.” He regretted every word of it, but he had to make sure Caracal would have a chance at life. “I also enchant her to never know of this spell.” Sandstorm would make sure to forgive Caracal for it…but now, he had a spell to fix. Chapter One One Thousand Years Later, On the Forgotten Isle Caracal watched Umber and Mulberry leave the Isle with Harmony, promising to return only three years later. How long had she been on the Forgotten Isle? She didn’t know. The days and nights blurred into each other and felt like hundreds of years. She stared at her pale, leafy wings again, and sighed. Why was she so different? Well, why was she not as different as the other WildWings? *I’m probably useless here,* she thought. At least she had the venomous barb SandWings had. But… she didn’t know SandWings *had* tail barbs, because all she remembered was the Forgotten Isle.
