Pokemon champions out today, and we already know that the first format will be allowing 1 mega evolution on your team. A lot of people, especially on scratch, dont have much experience with megas, so I'll be explaining how to use them. IS THE MEGA GOOD? The first and most obvious question that needs to be asked is is your mega even a good pokemon. we can see a lot of megas are very bad, with only a select few being considered usable. the best megas as we already know are kangaskhan, charizard y, gengar and rayquaza, but of course of the new megas some of the better ones are frosslass, skarmory, heatran and dragonite. I could be wrong though as we will only know when champions is out. the worst megas are absol, victreebel and clefable. IS THE BASE FORM BETTER? Using up your mega slot is a skill, and you need to learn it. for example, baxcalibur with life orb can do more damage than mega baxcalibur. so yuo need to ask yourself if the base form with an item is better. MEET THE WIN CONDITION If you are using a rain team and add mega charizard y, youve lost the plot. your mega must contirbute to the team in a way that gives it good synergy with the other pokemon. if all the other pokemon are chess pieces working together and the mega evolved pokemon is just doing its own thing, the team wont fully work as you need the pokemon to support and synergise well. its the reason that UBERs teams are bad in most other formats. POSITIONING If you lead with a mega evolution to set up and try to kill everything immeadiatly, its probably not going to go well. its vital to know your mega inside out, is it good at the front, should i let it clean up in the back. by knowing where to place your star of the show youll have won the game in team preview. If your mega goes down quickly, youll struggle to keep up with your opponent, and thats why every team needs BACKUP OFFENSIVE OPTION an essential to every team, this is the reason zamazenta is bad. its not offenisve enough. if you use mega meganium, which i would not recommend, you'll need another pokemon that can do some heavy lifting if it goes down. generally on teams i like having a physical attacker, a special attacker, backup offense, 2 supports and offensive support. in this way, no pokemon is doing everything on its own. DONT BE BIASED if you want to win, you have to put personal biases aside. im really sorry malamar fans. by using a pokemon you really like that is really bad, youre often creating difficult situations for yourself. my favourite pokemon is the 2009 world champ toxicroak, but i cant use that on a sun team becasue of dry skin. It's the same situation with why use morpeko when you can use miraidon. ROLES OVERLAPPING every pokemon on the team has something to do. set up screens, sweep, clean up, taunt, tailwind, etc. its important that these roles dont overlap, as using two dedicated tailwind setters for example leaves your team with less flexibility. this is why offense teams and actually just most teams overall contain a clear balance between special and physical offense so that enough roles are made clear for every member on the team. this allows for better play as two different halves of the meta are being targeted efficiently. when restricted legendaries are legal, we often see physical attackers paired with special ones, like calydon, bolt-beam, ghost dog and hotdog. balance was the name of the reg f meta team, and its pretty self explanatory. When it comes to megas, its extremely important to know all of this. it looks like the first regulation of champions will allow only 1 mega, so choose well. ill be making a project about the best and worst new megas dw. if you were to use mega venusaur, a bulky special attacker that just stays on the field forever, you may want a fast glass cannon special attacker to accompany it, as well as a screens setter to improve its bulk. if you were to use mega meganium, pairing it with water types to hit fire types as well as ground or steel types to counter its poison matchup would be beneficial. if you wanted to use mega raichu y, you might want redirection as its defences are so poor. you might also use redirection to get some full powered eruptions and water spouts with mega camerupt and mega blastoise. every mega can be made to work, and while some will work better than others, finding the balance where your mega can work will be the most important thing for the first regulation of pokemon champions Thanks for reading. A lot of effort goes into these projects,so support is always appreciated. as always, i wont ask for follows, go drink some water and have a great day. a special thanks of course to who gave me the idea for this project. if you liked this project, check out these ones where I discuss the element of suprise in teambuilding or what the best added evolution is:
