Do you like bananas? Facts: Bananas are berries that are grown in warm tropical regions near the equator. They grow from clusters on tall plants and need full sunlight and lots of water to thrive. That tree you see? Bananas don't grow on trees, but rather they grow on giant herbaceous perennial plants that mimic a trunk. The most common banana that is sold is called a Cavendish; most of the bananas you see in the supermarket are these! But it used to be different. The Gros Michel used to be the most common banana, as they were known for being sweet, but the Gros Michel ended up going to the brink of extinction after a disease wiped out most of them. Bananas have a wide range of uses. While you can just peel them and eat them, they are also used in baking desserts such as Banana bread, banana split ice cream, and banana pudding. The banana peel is also edible and has nutritional value! Bananas, when not ripe, are green in colour and firm. When they become ripe, they become bright yellow, and the flesh inside becomes softer. Once the banana is too old, the peel starts to become brown, and the banana becomes mushy.
