It lived during the mid-Cretaceous period, approximately 112 to 108 million years ago. Discovery: It was first described in 1988 by Alexander Kellner and Diógenes de Almeida Campos. Location: Its fossils were found in the Santana Formation (Romualdo Member) in Brazil. Name: The name comes from the mythology of the Tupi indigenous people; it refers to a familiar spirit. Physical Characteristics: The most distinctive feature of Tupuxuara was its impressive cranial crest, which varied depending on the species and the maturity of the specimen. Wingspan: Adults reached a wingspan of about 5 to 5.5 meters. Crest: They had a flat crest that originated at the snout and extended towards the back of the skull. This crest is believed to have been highly vascularized, suggesting it served to regulate body temperature or as a display. Diet: Initially thought to be a fish-eater (piscivore) due to its discovery in coastal areas, more recent research suggests it may have been a terrestrial animal similar to modern storks, feeding on small animals or fruit. Flight: It was an expert flier, capable of covering great distances over the ancient Tethys Sea. Growth: Juvenile specimens have been found showing that the crest did not fully develop until the animal was an adult, reinforcing the theory that it served for species recognition or selection. Habitat: It lived in what is now northeastern Brazil. At that time, the area was a system of coastal lagoons with a tropical climate, sharing the ecosystem with other famous pterosaurs like Anhanguera and dinosaurs like Irritator.
