suggested by @elmwze & @swanstory Gosh. Double standards are such an insult. Let’s take a few examples; Pretty privilege. Imagine two people, with the same characteristics, the same everything. The only thing they differ in is appearance. One is more "beautiful" than the other. Of course, the more "beautiful" one gets the praise. Racism. 2 muslim women, both wear hijab. One is brown in colour with Asian features, the other pale with European features. Guess what? I’ve encountered so many of these, and the European one often gets pity. The Asian one always gets ridicule. Both examples were of appearance.. now let’s talk online trends. Right now, being "quirky" and "weird" are both desirable. The word "whimsy" gets thrown around a lot, when what they’re doing isn’t even close to it. It’s almost like there’s this invisible social box that you have to fit in to. They love to be "quirky", "weird", "whimsical" and "funny".. but once they come out of the box? Poof! Done. What’s actually "weird" is an "ick". Furthermore, you know people who have a lot of pets? Well, let’s take the most popular pets. Cats and dogs. Cats are usually associated with woman, and dogs with men. Sure. A woman who has a lot of cats? Crazy cat lady. A man who has a lot of dogs? Oh, right, "a dog is a man's best friend"! Funny. I’ve given all these examples, but I haven’t dived into why it happens. Why do double standards exist? I feel like it’s a vast combination that we can’t really deep dive into. I’m sure double standards have existed for centuries, and we don’t know why. History, colonialism, society.. I’m not sure. Maybe it’s a certain bias towards things. The human brain often biases certain aspects and things in general based off of past experience. And we’ve kind of been conditioned to think like this, intentionally or not. Where you’re from also matters too. Different cultures, different people, different way of being raised. Countries definitely have their own double standards. Maybe we should reflect more on our actions. Now, how to solve double standards? That’s a mystery to me, and I think I’ll end it here. Maybe do some research. But, that concludes this project. I felt more energetic and let out a bit more of my personality this time, and I would really love to see your thoughts on this. What do you think of double standards, have you had any experiences with it, how do you think we can resolve it and do you have any ideas why they happen in the first place? Let me know. Sincerely, rae.
