Hello everyone! I'm sharing these designs, and a little bit about where they came from. These are characters from a (rather) old WoF-inspired story of mine, called Our Kingdom Come. I wrote it over a few years, though eventually I came to a point where I just couldn't continue anymore. And I've left it laying around untouched for a couple of years now. But I finally know why I couldn't keep writing it: It's because I completely changed it for the sake of my only two readers (my brothers), and in doing that, completely deviated from my original plan for this story. I wasn't writing the story the way I wanted to - I was writing it how they wanted it. I introduced characters who weren't supposed to be there. Turned my favorite character into an antagonist. Destroyed the intended plot and changed it into something I never wanted. All just so my only audience would like the story. But /I didn't/. I didn't enjoy writing it anymore. I never wanted that. I knew what I wanted for the story from the moment I started it, and I didn't do it. That's why I couldn't continue. I turned the story into something I didn't like, just so it would be liked by others. But! I'm not going to do that anymore. I'm rewriting Our Kingdom Come. How I want it, this time. I'm keeping the original characters - the ones who the story was meant to focus on. I'm just changing their designs a little, to align with my new art style, because it's changed a lot since I started writing the old version of this story. Seagull had always been one of my favorites. He was written to be a character I liked. It shouldn't have mattered that my brothers didn't like him. But I changed him for them. I'm not doing that this time. He will be as he was intended. (Btw he may a a royal but he is not related to Pearl or Pacifica ^^ in this story Seagull is the last of the Coral bloodline, and Pearl and Pacifica are part of a new Seawing royal lineage.) On to design yap!! AAAA FLUFFY CUTE DRAGONS AHAHAHA I made it so each tribe has their own unique ear shapes and fur lengths. I'm used to drawing fluffy things, so this is how my style fits with their existence logically. Seawings have shorter, rounded ears that keep water out by being pointed backwards. Their fur is relatively short, because waterlogged coats would be unhelpful for swimming. Rainwing have pointed, batlike ears that can catch vibrations in the air, and minimal fur, giving them the potential to be optimal hunters if they so chose. Icewings have long, pointed ears, and thick fur. The narrowness of their ears helps protect their eardrums from the constant echoes and vibrations caused by being surrounded by smooth ice. The thick fur helps keep them warm in the tundra. Nightwings have ears similar to those of Rainwings, except they're even bigger. Being active at night, where everything is more silent, they need to be able to hear as much as possible. Nightwings also have exceptional night vision, and some are capable of echolocation. Nightwings have thicker fur, because they are active during the night, though they often develop thinner coats in the warmer seasons. Skywings have tall, pointed ears with lots of fluff to keep the wings and small flying things out. They have less fur for mobility, but still enough to keep them warm in their mountain homes. The usual wing membranes were not suitable for catching drafts and facing high winds, so Skywings developed feathers wings instead. This also helps them fly more quietly. Sandwings have the least fur, because it's warm in the desert. They retain their barbed tails, and warm colors to blend in with the sand. They have larger paws so they don't sink into the sand, and thicker wings membranes for long flights. In addition, their ears are folded, so as not to get sand in them from the frequent sandstorms. I'll work out the other tribe-unique traits as I draw more :D But I'm gonna talk about colors now :3 Just a little A few tribes have gender-specific colors. For seawings, purple is a very rare color, especially deep purple, and only occurring in female Seawings. There have only been three previously recorded cases of purple Seawings, those being Indigo, Queen Pearl I, and Lumi. For Nightwings, purple is also a color that only occurs in females, though it's more common than in Seawings. I don't have much to say about that because it's not really a rare color. For Icewings, they can also sometimes be pale purple. This can happen with both female and male Icewings, though it's generally see as a more feminine trait, as it's been seen more often in females. Little research has been done to figure out whether it's actually more common in females, or if it's just a coincidence. On to design and character quirks! Pearl is a sea-rain hybrid, though almost no one except the royal family in the Seawings tribe is aware of this. (Keep in mind that most of them haven't seen a Rainwing before!) Pearl, as the older sister and next in line for the throne (cont in n+c)
(cont from description) is very loud and proud about how she's going to be the next queen, but also faces the pressure of hiding the Rainwing part of herself from the rest of her kingdom. The way you see her in her ref is her natural appearance, though she usually substitutes the oranges and yellow for blues instead. She also tends to use a lighter purple color, being just unique enough to stand out, but just "Seawing" enough to fit in. Pacifica is pure Seawing, making her and Pearl half sisters. She has no interest in being queen and fully supports Pearl, though she faces the feeling of being less important, often just being called "Pearl's sister" or "the other one". I do love her design tho <3 Pacifica wants to be a scholar! Sapphire is half Seawing, and left the Icewing kingdom because she didn't want to be part of their silly social heirarchy. She wants to be a detective! I also like her design a lot. Nightlight is definitely a unique one! He's a trans demiboy, and one of the only openly queer dragons in the series. He's also inspired by scene/emo culture. Probably the only dragon like this <3 Nightlight never really fit in with the rest of the Nightwings, and eventually left to go explore the land. Nightlight is their chosen name. You can look inside the project if you want to know their dead name, though he changed it because it was too girly. Being a purple Nightwing is yet another social barrier for them, since it's a "female" color. But he actually likes this color, and is not ashamed of it in the slightest. Cinder! My floofy firescales bean! In my series, Cinder is one of Clay and Peril's dragonets, and plays a similar role to Peril in the beginning. Queen Scarlet is also still alive in this story. Cinder always liked fighting, but she'll slowly learn that there's more to life than battle, and eventually become a glassblower! Citrine isn't as significant, but is Pacifica's childhood friend, and they eventually get together ^^ He's also a more brightly colored for a Sandwing. Did I already talk about Lumi? I don't remember talking about Lumi. she's one of the few purple Seawings! She and Pacifica are also the only Seawings with curly fins- a rare but not gender-specific trait. Lumi is only seen once in a memory where she oofs in a battle... she is still lore relevant though!! Did I mention that Nigtlight and Cinder will also be a couple late on? :>
