He was so overwhelmed he couldn't think straight. He thought his eyes were playing tricks on him at first. It had been only a little bit ago. He came out to the barrens to find his mate. Find out where they went. Wanted to tell her the good news. He was expecting kits again! Maybe this litter would be perfectly fine. Maybe there won't be complications again. and now... great starclan. what was he supposed to do. what- what would anyone do. he tried replaying everything in his head. He could scent her nearby. A gentle smile plastered on their face as he called out her name. "Petalpassion? Petalpassion, where are you~?" Their scent was getting stronger, and still no response. Slowly, his voice went from cheerful to concerned. his fur spiked when he caught the scent of someone else. someone whose scent he knew. someone who was no longer welcome in their clan. someone he knew from the start not to trust and was right the whole starclan damned time. At this point, he had been frantically following Tal's scent trail, desperate to find her. Calling their name as loud as possible. The original plan to tell them about their new litter was completely forgotten, his priorities now to find Tal and make sure she was safe. she. she wasn't. His heart stopped. The smell of blood and venom filled the air. He choked on it. He couldn't breathe without smelling and tasting it. In the distance... ...Petalpassion's lifeless body. her brown fur disheveled. There were two different bite marks on her body, swollen, with red, glowing, sticky blood matted into her fur around the bites and spilling onto the ground around their body. Triangletriumph froze. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't think. He couldn't move. His face was stuck in a look of pure terror as he stared at his mate's dead body from a distance. His jaw had been hanging open, and it took /too/ long before he could get a sound out. It was a loud, high pitched shriek-like noise, filled with fear, anger, sadness, and despair. "N-NO!" Triangletriumph screamed, suddenly being able to move again. Faster than he's ever run before. His fur ignited immediately as he ran, blue flames violently flickering around him, sparks and embers flying everywhere. His shadow swallowed their body as he reached her. "no no no.... no. No no no no no nO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO-" the golden cat's voice slowly got louder and louder every time he said it. His face felt sticky and hot as tears streamed out of his eyes rapidly, evaporating quickly and filling his vision with steam. "please no please no, Tal PLEASE-" he screamed, his voice filling the air. He gasped for breaths in between sobs. He was hyperventilating badly. And he just... Kept saying it. Over and over and over. "Please don't leave me Tal- please. Please don't go don't go DON'T GO! Please come back, please.. please!" He shook her body, trying to get a reaction. Trying to see if she was okay. To see if maybe they had just passed out or something. But there was no response. No movement. No breathing. After a while of screaming these words over and over they slowly turned into unintelligible shrieks and sobs. He collapsed down on top of her, burying his muzzle in their fur, his body still shaking aggressively, barely able to breathe, his tears now spilling onto them. maybe if he stayed here... Maybe if he just calmed down and closed his eyes..... It would be like she's okay. Like his mate was just cuddled up and asleep with him. Like everything was going to be fine. the scent of their blood filling the air stopped that. [[continued in n+c]]
[[read top first!!]] how long had he been there? how long had he laid here, sobbing over his mate? how long has it been since he left camp to try and tell her news of their new litter only to... only to find her... his breathing had finally settled after who knows how long. Tears were still streaming down his face, but they were slowing down, and he could see beyond the steam again. He blinked a few times, and sat up. He felt lightheaded. Exhausted. His body hurt with how much he'd been screaming, shrieking, and wailing. He couldn't look at her anymore. He couldn't wake up and see that sweet smile, wouldn't be able to share a nest with them, wouldn't be able to raise their last litter of kits together. All Because Of that /stupid/ Snake. "I'll kill him." Triangletriumph hissed to himself, his voice filled with malice. He had to be long gone by now, but he still stepped away from Petalpassion to survey the area. His head was too clouded to focus so he wouldn't be able to follow his scent. "I'LL FIND YOU." He screamed into the empty desert. "I'LL FIND YOU AND I'LL [bad word bot] YOU." "I'LL [bad word bot stole this word] YOU AND /EVERYONE/ YOU'VE EVER CARED ABOUT." he stumbled backwards, breathing heavily. He glanced down at Petalpassion once more and looked at her softly. Last time he had to do something like this it was his child. Now it was his mate. He lifted Tal's body up by her scruff and maneuvered her onto his back, using all his strength to carry them back to Pyroclan. no one prepares you for something like this. no one tells you how hard it is. With frequent breaks catching his breath and letting himself rest while his emotions took him over completely, it took until nightfall to finally have the entrance to camp in sight. Instead of taking her straight to camp, he went a little ways away from the entrance, and laid her down gently by a tree to clean them up. He licked their fur to smooth it out, cleaned up her blood, and carefully avoided the bite marks, as he didn't know if the venom would affect him and was not willing to take the chances. After a while... She really did look like she was just sleeping. He left her for a few moments, to retrieve some flowers. A few white lilies, some pink carnations, light purple asters, and a mix of bright red poppies and white poppies. Carefully, he strung his bouquet into Tal's fur. He covered her body in flowers. Gently he untied the bow from her leg, and held it in his mouth as he walked towards camp, leaving them by the tree for just a few moments longer. It was late, everyone would hopefully be asleep, so he knew where to find everyone. Triangletriumph went to the medicine den, and set the bow down beside their daughter, Dustpetal, gently prodding her awake, not speaking but signaling her to follow him. He did the same with each one of his kits. Ringrevenant. Parallelglow. Perpendicularparadox. Goldenpaw. Fluffypaw. Ragepaw. Passion-fruitpaw. He knew there was probably more cats who'd want to know right now. Her younger siblings... friends... sho.... but he couldn't. Trust. Anyone. Anyone more than his own family. He couldn't trust anyone more than his kits and Tal's dama. He softly asked they all wait for him in camp as he stepped into the leader's den to bring the leader out with them. His memory was too foggy to remember most of the words spoken at this point. How did Trapperstar react again? Who knows. His heart ached as he slowly explained to everyone what had happened, and had brought them along with him to her body, which he had lifted onto him once more, leading the way up to the volcano, his face tear stained but still raising his head high. As they reached the top, they each said their goodbyes to Tal. He waited until everyone had stepped away from them before stepping up to her. Tears were streaming down his face again. He leaned down and shakily whispered the words "I love you." In Petalpassion's ear. Triangletriumph held still in his position for a few moments. Taking in her scent for one last time. He lifted her up by her scruff. He felt weak. They were supposed to be together. They were supposed to see their kits grow up and live their lives and have kits of their own together. They were supposed to finally have a calm, somewhat normal life together. you don't always get what you want, don't you? He took her towards the ledge. It was tradition, returning the dead to the everlasting volcano. And so, with tears and steam fogging his vision, Triangletriumph leaned her over the edge... ...and let go. something died inside him the second she sank beneath the boiling magma. Everything around him seemed to be gone. He had to have sat at that ledge for hours, sobbing by himself. He had decided to wait until long after everyone else had gone back down the mountain before going down himself. His magic pendant was glowing brighter than it ever has before. And it will never go out again.
