so it's probably evident by my username, but I love KOTLC. It's a great book series. But I recently met up with a friend and honestly there are a lot of parts of KOTLC that just don't make it as great as it could be. #1: Sophie Okk this is gonna be a long one...she's just not a great character. I KNOW I KNOW she's the main character and a lot of people like her and she's so oblivious and sometimes a pick-me, even if she doesn't realize it. She doesn't pay attention to her friends. 1st book is half Dex, half Fitz. Everything until Legacy is Fitz. After that it's Keefe. Those are the only people she focuses on, and she says she doesn't want her friends to get hurt, which I believe but she doesn't think about them very much, especially Tam and Linh, Marella, Maruca, and Wylie. And at first she wonders about Wylie and wants to get to know him better, but that's only when it applies to her (cuz she thought that prentice was her dad)! #2: Representation So like I know the Elvin (elven??) world is not that great in terms of representation. Matchmaking and bad matches etc make it like that. But almost all the characters are white...there's only 1 type of elf. No other languages or cultures. Idk it just bothers me sometimes. #3: the romance this in part connects to what I said earlier about matchmaking- the romance plot/subplots are not that great. It all focuses on Sophie, and her jumping between Fitz and Keefe, and Dex in nightfall (that made me so sad, Dex doesn't get the acceptance he deserves. not about Sophie, she has a right to turn him down. but in life and friendships). but what about the other characters? and I know that a queer match would probably be a bad match but when are we going to get something else? i'm actually yearning for it because, don't get me wrong, I love sokeefe. but there's like almost zero romantic development for anyone else...all we can do is dream. thanks for letting me yap! comment your hot takes or opinions below. heart and star if you enjoyed, and have a good day :)!
