Shirley slipped on the beautiful red and black costume dress for The Royal Costume Gala she was attending, the gown was a blood red and made her feel like an assassin in disguise. The gown was an off the shoulder red and black dress with a silk bow tied around her waist and matching smaller bows on the shoulders of the flowy sleeved dress, and her coffee brown hair fell loosely around her shoulders. She also had a feathered mask to go with that but she wouldn't wear that till they reached the party as it was quite uncomfortable. Just then she heard a knock on the door, Shirley dearly hoped it wasn't another one of the suitors had arranged for her to entertain, but at the same time she wasn't one to get her hopes too high. She sighed, picked up the little red dragon that had followed her home the other day that she had named Ember after his fiery red scales and amber yellow eyes. Ember made a sound that sounded like a happy rumble and stole the pretty white flower she was wearing along with her dress in her hair. She gasped and chided the little dragon, “Ember! We don't steal, silly!” She gently took the flower out of his mouth, weary of the tiny sharp dragon teeth in Ember’s mouth and placed it back in her hair. Shirley opened the door to see her father standing there with his stone cold look. “Hello, Father.” She greeted her father with a small curtsy. He was wearing a deep blue suit and tie, the same color as her eyes, she wondered if that was purposeful. “Ready to go?” He asked while he surveyed her gala style attire. He raised his left eyebrow slightly and cleared his throat then took Shirley’s arm to make their grand entrance, King and Princess, as per custom for the start of a Gala in the kingdom her Father ruled over, and soon she would too, Whisperwood. The usual custom for these types of royal galas would go as follows. The Queen would make a grand entrance herself then followed by her husband, the king, their son or daughter would do likewise. Then, following, the Royal would make a toast to prosperity and magic and this would signal the start of the extravagant party being held. Guests would mingle, the king and queen would share a dance, and, often, the heir to the throne would find true love and so forth. However, Shirley’s mother passed away when she was very young. The thought of that made her heart ache and her eyes sting a bit so she shook her head slightly to banish the thought from her mind and told herself, l’m at a royal gala and will probably meet the love of my life tonight, l need to enjoy this, what could possibly go wrong?
