The 1987 Maryland train collision, was a catastrophic rail accident that occurred on January 4, 1987, in Chase, Maryland. It was the deadliest accident in Amtrak's history until 1993, resulting in 16 deaths and 174 injuries. The Collision: At approximately 1:30 PM, Amtrak Train 94 (the Colonial), traveling north from Washington, D.C. to Boston, slammed into three Conrail freight locomotives. The Impact: The Amtrak train was traveling at an estimated 108 mph (174 km/h) at the time of impact. The collision caused a massive explosion and fire as the fuel tanks on the Conrail locomotives ruptured. Fatalities: Among the dead were the Amtrak engineer, a lounge car attendant, and 14 passengers. Most of the deaths occurred in the lead Amtrak passenger car, which was nearly destroyed.
