the number it says is how many bombs are touching it diagonally horizontally and vertically if it is a white square then there are no bombs around it. When you know there is a bomb near turn the flag on at the bottom of your screen and tap the bomb. Once every bomb is marked you have finished.
try the corner strategy, they're usually blank.
